The Center

Mission and structure

The Center for Cerebral Aneurysms at Mannheim University Medical Center consolidates the assessment, consultation, and structured monitoring of individuals with intracranial aneurysms and those who have experienced aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. It is located within the Department of Neurosurgery and collaborates closely with the Departments of Neuroradiology and Neurology, as well as the Biomedical Informatics Unit.

It is supported by the CARE-IA research project, which is funded by the HW & J. Hector Foundation from 2026 to 2029. Within the Heidelberg-Mannheim network, Mannheim thus forms the reference site for the comprehensive assessment and long-term care of aneurysm patients – complementing the established strengths of both locations in stroke medicine and interventional neuroradiology.

Surgical expertise in complex aneurysms

​There are aneurysms for which endovascular procedures are insufficient, ineffective, or unsafe: very large or giant aneurysms, broad-based or fusiform aneurysms, calcified or partially thrombosed aneurysms, aneurysms that have recurred after prior treatment, and aneurysms located in difficult-to-access areas of the cerebral vascular tree. For these cases, we offer the full spectrum of open cerebrovascular surgery—including bypass procedures, which reroute cerebral blood flow before excising the aneurysm. Procedures of this magnitude are performed at only a few centers nationwide; patients are referred to us from across the region for these procedures.
